SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Course Title: Environmental Science Grade Level: 11-12
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Physical Science & Biology
  Credits: 10

This is a basic course, which integrates several sciences to study ecology and our environment. It will show a connection between science, technology, and our society and students will use logical problem solving to examine real ecological issues. In doing so, they will improve their awareness and understanding of the environmental problems the world is facing today.

Topics: environmental science and its global perspective, ecosystems, characteristics of biomes, resources (renewable and non-renewable), recycling, pollution, atmosphere and climate, land management, population growth, conservation

Course Title: Physical Science Grade Level: 9
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: 8th Science Teacher Recommendation
*Required for Graduation Credits: 10

Physical science is the practical study of the relationship between matter and energy. The course offers an introduction to physical laws and chemical processes. Scientific principles and concepts are reinforced by experimental activities. Science means "having knowledge". It is observing, studying, and explaining the world around you. Science is creative: it is learning and doing. Physical science may include such topics as force and energy, properties and interactions of matter, properties of waves, electricity and magnetism, and energy resources. Problem solving is an integral part of the course. You will gain an understanding of the applications of science to everyday life.

Course Title: Biology Grade Level: 10
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Physical Science
*Required for Graduation Credits: 10

Biology is the study of life. This class is a survey course which investigates the processes of life and how these processes are manifested in the different groups of organisms. Some of the topics included in this course are the classification of organisms, natural selection, the cell, genetics, and an exploration of the diversity of life on earth. Scientific concepts are reinforced by laboratory activities.

Course Title: Chemistry Grade Level: 11-12
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Physical Science, Biology & Algebra I
  Credits: 10

Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes matter undergoes. The study of chemistry is central to all sciences. This course is an introductory program that is designed to be comprehensive and relevant. The aim of the course is to enable students to develop a better understanding of their world, to appreciate that their world would be radically different without the practical applications of chemistry. A balanced approach is presented in combining chemical theories and concepts with quantitative problems and laboratory investigations. Students will find the material challenging and will be encouraged to think independently throughout the course, chemistry is an excellent college preparatory course.

Course Title: Physiology Grade Level: 12
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Biology & Chemistry
  Credits: 10

Physiology is an advanced science course dealing with the form and function of the human body. The student will be expected to learn the terminology concerning the various structures of the body as well as understanding the mechanics as to how those structures function and interact. Scientific concepts are reinforced by laboratory activities. This course is an excellent college preparatory course for those interested in careers in the health field including nursing, medicine, physical therapy, and athletic training.

Course Title: Physics Grade Level: 12
Duration: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra II
  Credits: 10

Physics is the study of the relationship between matter and energy. The course is designed to not only present the mathematical equations of physics, but also the scientific concepts behind these equations. Topics covered may include motion and its causes; heat and temperature, waves, light and sound, and even quantum mechanics. Physics is about the world around you. It is about the colors of the rainbow, the sparkle of a diamond, playing baseball, driving a car, and playing the clarinet. The integration of theory, problem-solving, and laboratory investigation allows the students to build a true understanding of physics and ensures thorough preparation for college.
