ART DEPARTMENT
General Description: Each semester consists of three or four large units. Within
each, an important period of art history or distinct cultural group will
be emphasized. From each period of art history or cultural group an artistic
theme will be identified and art from many times and places will be used
to amplify the theme. The student will make art which relates to the
main concept or theme. Time is allowed for students to pursue areas of
special interest. |

This semester of studio art is structured around the themes
which artists have used over the centuries. This semester of study provides
a look at the significant art produced from the beginning of prehistoric
times through the ancient Rome. The themes include people, places, objects,
events, spiritual and symbolic themes, and fantasy among others. The studio
work and art history/appreciation included in this semester will include
work related to the following themes: |

| Duration: 2nd Semester | Prerequisite: Art I |
| Credits: 5 | |
| Continuing the study of art of the Western World, students
will study the art of the Early Christians and art and architecture of
the Romanesque period. In two other major units, the students will work
with the art of the Plains Native American and Asian art and architecture.
The work done this semester will be on the same level of difficulty as
the first semester. The themes and media will be derived from the study
of: Plains Indian: Group sculpture and oil painting Art of the Early Christians: Drawing based on symbol Asian Art and Architecture: Drawings with themes from myth and legend Romanesque Art and Architecture: Drawing expressing tension and consideration of the community as a response to the medieval experience. |

| The studio work and art history/appreciation included in this semester will include work related to the following: Art of the Twentieth Century: Work in several media inspired by a wide variety of works from the Twentieth Century: Cubism, Surrealism, Social Realism, Sculpture in the Twentieth Century, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. “Art projects dealing with careers in art like advertising, cartooning and design”. | |

| This course is an independent study during which students
will spend the two semesters working with ideas which inspired significant
artistic movements in the last half of the Twentieth Century: Op Art and
Color Field Painting, Minimalist Art, New Realism, Super realism, Photo
realism, Appropriation in Art, Conceptual Art & Performance Art, Art
of the Future:The Artist Reconnects, Senior Thesis and Exhibit. Art VII-Students will create a slide portfolio and put together a professional portfolio that can be used for applying for college, scholarships or a job. |

| This course will allow students with a special interest in ceramics (clay pottery and sculpture) to continue with clay work in greater depth. Students will learn many aspects of the field of ceramics including hand built pottery, throwing on the potter's wheel and glaze making. $10.00 fee for cost of clay/glazes will be charged to each student-each semester. | |
